The Cultural and Linguistic Competence Implementation Team, which grew out of the At Risk/Prevention Learning Community, conducted pilot trainings for area mental health agency executives and providers in Fall 2009. The program is designed to help participants examine their own thinking, learn more about themselves and – in the process – improve relationships with all members of our diverse community. In 2010, seven area providers became trainers themselves so the program can be sustained throughout the community. Community trainers, who presented their first program in April, are:
- Estrella Griggs, Santa Fe Youth Services
- Sharron Herrera, Fort Worth ISD
- Virginia Hoft, Santa Fe Youth Services
- Sonya Mosley, Lena Pope Home, Inc.
- Jacinto Ramos, Jr., Tarrant County Juvenile Services
- Walter Taylor, MHMR of Tarrant County
- Stacy Williamson, MHMR of Tarrant County
The training effectiveness is being evaluated by MHMR researchers.
The 2010-11 Cultural Competency Team will:
- Determine strategic immediate and long term goals to support the Strategic Plan for Hand in Hand.
- Recruit and train volunteer trainers in California Brief Multicultural Scale (CBMCS) to complete the work.
- Train up to 80 agency staff in CBMCS during 2010.
