The Fort Worth Independent School District Family Resource Centers work collaboratively with students, their families and community resources to provide support for mental health and mental health related needs. The collaborative partners link academic, social and emotional health by increasing access to mental health care and other support services in a school setting.
As a result, these school-based centers remove barriers to learning, promote academic achievement and increase graduation rates. They also promote healthy families and serve to engage families in their children's education. The link between the collaborative partners also provides an atmosphere for compassionate and competent care that addresses the unique needs of individual children and their families.
Each center offers:
- Mental health assessments
- Individual, family and group counseling
- Family education and support groups
- Parenting strategies
- Medicaid/CHIP application assistance
- ESL classes
- Consultations and referrals, with links to mental health providers throughout Tarrant County
The first Family Resource Center opened at Riverside Middle School on December 1, 2004. Since that time, the district has opened three additional centers at Forest Oak Middle School, JP Elder Middle School and Western Hills Elementary School. Each site serves one quadrant of the district, providing students and their families with mental health care and support.
Other FRC sponsored programs include:
Parent Support and Education
The Family Resource Centers offer “Becoming a Love and Logic Parent,” a six-week series of classes designed to help you help your child become more responsive and responsible. For fees and other information, call (817) 871-2833.

Family Adventures
Family Adventures offer FWISD children and their families a chance to spend an entire Saturday together. They take on a variety of mentally and physically challenging games and activities in a fun, outdoor setting. Trained facilitators help families personally challenge themselves by going beyond their perceived boundaries, thinking in new ways and working with others to solve problems. Family members leave with a sense of accomplishment and new insights into their own abilities and strengths. Transportation is provided from FWISD campuses at no charge. Family Adventures are offered monthly throughout the school year.
